Abbas Story |
Seventeen year old Rasha was harvesting food for her family, when she encountered a cluster bomblet hidden under the water. The explosion, cost Rasha her lower leg. Amazingly, Rasha considers herself lucky. Her story picked up by local media ran world wide. Offers of help came pouring in. One offer received was the promise of a prosthetic limb and help with rehabilitation. Journalists dropping in to visit her, bring gifts so she can pursue her much publicized art interests. Rasha exclaimed to one reporter that she feels lucky. Lucky, because unlike the others in her village, she doesn't have to wait for a limb. Soon she will be whole again. Across the road propped on a window seat is ten year old Abbas. His injuries much more severe. He has lost both legs above the knee and part of his right hand. Everyday he sits and watches the parade of visitors to Rasha's home. He has heard of her good fortune and he tries to be happy for her - but he is unable to stop the tears from falling. Why Rasha and not me? Will anyone help me, he wonders? Does anyone care? |
