The Legacy of War Land Mines and Cluster Bombs UN-EXPLODED Millions of land mines, cluster bombs, and other unexploded remnants of war strewn across the world pose a vicious and indiscriminate threat to children. A Humanitarian Disaster They are some of the most insidious weapons ever devised by man, laying in wait for their victims in fields, roads, forests and footpaths for decades. A Global Menace to Children. Every half-hour, someone around the world is killed or maimed by a Land Mine. Cluster Bombs are designed not to kill, but to inflict injury, pain and suffering. Victims who survive the massive trauma inflicted by these weapons require amputations, rehabilitation and reconstruction of their limbs |
Today 48 innocent people became victim to cluster bombs. 9 of these victims were small children. |
Children are at particular risk of injury and death from Land Mines and Cluster Bombs. |
Children by nature are curious and adventurous, they can easily mistake a Cluster Bomb for a toy or a strange object too interesting not to investigate. Very young children without reading skills often wander on to dangerous fields or play areas. Many more children are at risk by performing everyday chores such as gathering wood, herding livestock, or collecting water.. |
The very behaviors that make children - children, place them at greater risk for Land Mine and Cluster bomb injuries. Children suffer greater trauma when injured compared with adult land mine and cluster bomb victims. Children have higher fatality rates, experience more serious physical damage and more permanent disabilities as a result of their injuries. |
How many limb replacements will a growing child need? Every time a child outgrows their shoes, they will also outgrow their artificial limb. |
... it takes the whole community to raise and care for a child, the international community. |
