... it takes the whole community to raise and care for a child, the international community. |
With the foundation for life program help comes in many ways. Childsafe along with community volunteers identify children, their families and caregivers who need help with the child's injuries. Our initial response is geared towards the physical needs of the child, arranging and paying for surgeries, medications, prosthetic limbs, follow up medical treatments and orthopedic training. Once a child is stable physically, Childsafe begins to monitor social and emotional development. When needed or requested we provide the necessary help so child and family can make the adjustment to life with artificial limbs. Childsafe is committed to taking a tragedy and turning it into a triumph. Every child is shown ways to succeed, assisted in realizing their dreams. The loss of a limb is indeed a tragedy, the loss of hope is worse. Childsafe strives to give each child, each family reason to believe that hopes and dreams are just as achievable now as before the explosion. Understanding the problem helps explain the needs of these children. Read their experiences as told in their own words, the words of their families, as they speak of their lives now, after the explosion. The challenges that CHILDSAFE faces in getting to and helping these children are huge, but not unsurmountable. There are currently 110 million land mines in 64 countries, and untold millions of cluster bombs in over 23 countries. Every day, every hour more children are hurt, this is the legacy of wars. Childsafe and community volunteers are dedicated to rebuilding the lives and bodies of these innocent victims. |
